Johnson School of Business Mission Statement

The Johnson School of Business prepares graduates who are well versed in business principles and particularly adept in technical and communications skills within their major field(s) of study. Christian principles are applied to best prepare students for post-graduate study, effective servant leadership & citizenry, critical analysis of professional and environmental factors, and employment in an increasingly adaptive entrepreneurial and international business environment.

The Mission and Goals of the Johnson School of Business support and agree with the following Institutional Goals of McMurry University:

  • Students acquire an education shaped by Christian values;
  • Students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the professional workplace or post baccalaureate education;
  • Students acquire an enthusiasm for lifelong learning through expanded intellectual and cultural horizons.

The School of Business offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree and the Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree. The student who is a candidate for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree may concentrate his/her work in one or more of the following seven majors: Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, or Marketing. Students may choose to complete a dual major in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Non-core courses completed for credit in one major may be used for credit in a second major, except the Business Administration major. A minor is not required of the candidate for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

For the Bachelor of Business Administration degree, the student must complete the following:

  1. General Education Requirements. (To include a minimum of three hours of mathematics with a grade of “C-” or better, and ENGL 1310  and ENGL 1320  with a grade of “C-” or better.)
  2. The Business Core Course Requirement. (No grade of less than “C” is acceptable in the business core requirements.)
  3. A major within the business field. (No grade of less than “C” is acceptable in the major.)
  4. Sufficient hours of electives to meet all University requirements.

In addition to the BBA the student may choose an honors curriculum.

Admission requires completion of 60 hours of college credit and a GPA of at least 3.5 in ACCT 2310 ; ECON 2305 ; and BUSI 2320 , with a GPA of 3.25 in all other college work. Students must complete seven hours of honors courses in Business, including BUSI 4X96H - Honors Tutorial  and BUSI 4X97H - Honors Thesis . Departmental honors will be obtained in the student’s major.

In all majors in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program, a minimum of three hours of mathematics, with a grade of “C-” or better is required. Students may meet this requirement by completing MATH 1311 , or any other three hours of course work in the Department of Mathematics, excluding MATH 1315 , approved by the Dean of the School of Business. The student is urged to fulfill this requirement as early in the first two years of study as possible.

NOTE: Prior to enrollment in any 4000 level course offered in the School of Business, the student must have completed all 1000, 2000, and 3000 level courses listed in the Business Core Course Requirement. Course prerequisites may be waived by permission of the Instructor and the Dean of the School of Business.

RECOMMENDED ELECTIVES FROM THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Students with majors and minors outside the School of Business may wish to take business area courses as electives. The following courses are of general interest and have no prerequisites: ACCT 2310 , BUSI 2320 BUSI 3335 BUSI 3340 , ECON 2305 , FINC 3330 .

ONLINE-COURSES

Some courses in the School of Business may be offered in an online format. Courses may also be available on an alternative schedule, such as a mini term. Students should consult the appropriate schedule to determine if courses are being offered online or on alternative schedules, and for other course requirements.

To enroll in the Internship Program the student must be in good academic standing with the university and have completed 60 hours toward their undergraduate degree. Some positions may require specific skills and may require completion of certain courses. It should be noted that individual employers may have their own explicit requirements such as minimum GPA which is above what is required by the university, specific course work completed, and/or a classification of senior.

Academic credit is given for the internship plan of study through courses numbered 4X88 where X equals the number of credit hours taken (1, 2, or 3). The student will work with a business faculty member in the chosen discipline in completing a learning contract that documents the plan of study for each individual student. Once enrolled in a 4X88 course in the appropriate concentration the student is required to work approximately 120-150 hours to receive 3 credit hours, 90-120 for two credit hours, and 60-90 for one credit hour.

Applications are available through the office of the School of Business. The completed application should be delivered to a business faculty member in the chosen discipline.

Johnson School of Business Certificates

The Johnson School of Business (JSOB) offers a selection of certificates that will provide the opportunity for students to concentrate their coursework on specific areas of interest to them. Completed certificates will be documented on the student’s transcript and enhance prospects for employment in an increasingly competitive workplace. Students seeking to earn one or more certificates should understand that these are university certificates, not industry certifications. However, it is expected that these certificates can help prepare students to take industry certification programs/tests. The certificates are open to students of any major, but are designed with the business student in mind.

Eligibility requirements for all McMurry University certificates include:

  1. Any degree seeking McMurry student is eligible to participate.
  2. Certificates cannot be earned separate from a McMurry degree.
  3. Students must meet all prerequisites necessary for courses required in the certificate.
  4. All certificate coursework must be completed at McMurry University.
  5. Certificate curriculum must include at least four (4) courses (earning a minimum of 12 credit hours).
  6. Unless specified higher by a specific certificate, students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all certificate courses.
  7. Students seeking one or more certificates must declare their intention by noting it on a Degree Audit Request form in the Registrar’s Office on or before September 1 prior to May/August graduation or February 1 prior to December graduation.
