Johnson School of Business Mission and Goals

The mission of the Johnson School of Business is to empower every student for leadership in business and society.

The goals of the Johnson School of Business are to:

Inspire excellence and lifetime learning.
Engage students to model effective communication, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
Teach relevant business and entrepreneurship principles.

The mission and goals of the Johnson School of Business complement the University’s mission and core values through an ongoing pursuit of excellence in curricula, programs, and policies to develop student and faculty success. Students graduate prepared for professional careers, post graduate education, or to lead their own enterprise.

Undergraduate Studies

The Johnson School of Business offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Candidates for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree may concentrate their work in one or more of the following six majors: Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, or Marketing. Students may choose to complete a dual major in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Non-core courses completed for credit in one major may be used for credit in a second major, except the Business Administration major. A minor is not required of the candidate for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

For the Bachelor of Business Administration degree, the student must complete the following:

General Education Requirements: A minimum of three hours of mathematics with a grade of “C-” or better. (May be met with MATH 1311 or any other three hours of course work in the Department of Mathematics, excluding MATH 1315 , as approved by the Dean of the School of Business.) , and ENGL 1310 and ENGL 1320 with a grade of “C-” or better.)
The Business Core Course Requirement. (No grade of less than “C” is acceptable in the business core requirements.)
A major within the business field. (No grade of less than “C” is acceptable in the major.)
Sufficient hours of electives to meet all University requirements.

Students with majors and minors outside the School of Business may take business courses as electives. The following are required core courses and have no prerequisites: ACCT 2310 , ECON 2305 , ENTR 1310 , FINC 3315 , MGMT 3315 , and MKTG 3315 .

NOTE: Prior to enrollment in any 4000-level course offered in the School of Business, the student must have completed all 1000, 2000, and 3000 level courses listed in the Business Core Course Requirement. Course prerequisites may be waived with the permission of the Instructor and the Dean of the School of Business.

Special Programs

HONORS CURRICULUM

Students have the opportunity to choose an honors curriculum. Admission requires completion of 60 hours of college credit and a GPA of at least 3.5 in ACCT 2310 and ECON 2305 , with a GPA of 3.25 in all other college work. Students must complete seven hours of honors courses in Business, including BUSI 4X96H - Honors Tutorial and BUSI 4X97H - Honors Thesis. Departmental honors will be obtained in the student’s major.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

BUSI 4X88 : Business Internship

Enrollment in BUSI 4X88 is a requirement for all Bachelor of Business Administration degrees. To enroll in the Internship Program, the student must be in good academic standing with the University and have completed 60 hours toward their undergraduate degree. Individual employers may have additional requirements such as minimum GPA, classification, and/or specific coursework.

Internship Program Packets are available through the office of the School of Business. Academic credit is earned for BUSI 4X88, where X equals the number of credit hours taken (1, 2, or 3). The student is required to work a minimum of 120 hours to receive 3 credit hours, 90 hours to receive two credit hours, and 60 hours to receive one credit hour. The student will work with a business faculty member to complete an Internship Program Packet that documents the plan of study for each individual student.

CERTIFICATES

The Johnson School of Business offers a selection of certificates that provide the opportunity for students to concentrate their coursework. Completed certificates will be documented on the student’s transcript and enhance prospects for employment in an increasingly competitive marketplace. The certificates are open to students of any major.

Eligibility requirements for all McMurry University certificates include:

Any degree seeking McMurry student is eligible.
Certificates cannot be earned independent of a McMurry degree.
Students must meet all prerequisites necessary for courses required in the certificate.
All certificate coursework must be completed at McMurry University.
Certificate curriculum must include at least four (4) courses (earning a minimum of 12 credit hours).
Unless specified higher by a specific certificate, students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all certificate courses.
Students seeking one or more certificates must declare their intention by noting it on a Degree Audit Request form in the Registrar’s Office on or before September 1 prior to May/August graduation or February 1 prior to December graduation.
